Be Prepared for Change

Classroom spaces cannot and should not ever really be “done.” Classrooms need to be adaptable and ready for change so they can reflect the people in the space and the technologies and innovative practices that fill the rooms. Just as our world evolves, our rooms must as well.

Change will likely come in two primary forms: incremental change and large-scale change. First, we should anticipate (and welcome) the need to make modifications to spaces incrementally throughout the school year. As we move from one instructional unit to the next, as a new student joins the class, as an unanticipated world or personal event occurs, our rooms too should evolve and develop. We also need to respond to large-scale change. A new school year can bring new students, new policies, new initiatives, new demands, and in some cases, even entirely new roles. Classroom environments need to be considered, with adjustments made as part of implementation plans.

Changed spaces change practice, and changed practice opens up new ways students can interact with each other and with new information. Change will come; we need to be ready to change with it and adjust expectations.
